Le Vieil-Baugé
A BRIEF HISTORY: With the exception of the north wall, pierced with four narrow windows (first campaign in the 11th century) and partly covered with traces of old wall paintings, the base of the tower is the oldest part of the edifice (second campaign in the 11th century)
The surprising spire of the church was erected in 1856, the previous spire was made of stone. It was damaged by a hurricane and struck by lightning in 1859 and 1892. The warping of the timber added to the spiral effect makes our spire particularly striking, even from a distance
The whole church has been listed since December 19, 1973

THE EXTERIOR: The terrace has replaced the second nave of the church, which collapsed after a hurricane in 1806. It consisted of three successive chapels communicating with one another and with the main nave, which was closed, after the disaster, with the present south wall. The only remaining columns can still be seen clearly half embedded in the walls. Each chapel probably had the same sort of pediment as the ones forming the façades of the remaining south chapels. Despite the scars of time and wars, the pediments adorned with pilasters and medallions are still remarkable - Right: ground plan

SOUTH TRANSEPT: Only the Renaissance part remains with a coffer vault. A low door open on to the terrace.

THE SOUTH CHAPEL: Facing the north door, a fourth opening leads to the low south chapel whose 15th-century star-shaped vault covers a trapezoidal space. It enabled the nobility to attend Mass apart from commoners
