Jarzé
JARZE: SAINT-CYR AND SAINTE JULITTE CHURCH
11th- 16thcenturies
THE EXTERIOR: The base of the nave walls are in small, regular bond. The bay supporting the tower is reinforced by massive buttresses with two projections, much thicker than the other buttresses. Beneath the gutters of the choir and chevet the wall is adorned with a double frieze of delicately carved flowers and foliage scrolls. The tower and spire are modern.
Jarzé: nef, clocher et flèche nef: petit appareil
Jarzé: nave, tower and spire nave: coursed rubble
Walls of the choir and chevet: double frieze
NAVE: It consists of eight groin-vaulted bays resting on embedded columns without capitals. The fifth bay, supporting the tower, has retained its four massive pillars. Each bay is lighted by a flamboyant window.
CHANCEL: The mural paintings at the far end of the chancel formed the back of a Tomb of Christ, which was probably vaulted. They date to the 16th century.
FURNITURE: Ten oak stalls dating to the early 16thcentury with fine carved misericords. A very interesting stone statue, on the right just before the choir. It is a remarkable illustration of the quality of sculpture in Western France in the late 15th century. It represents a child with a pear in one hand and a handkerchief in the other.
