The church - built at the edge of a cliff on the left bank of the river Gartempe - dominates the town of Montmorillon. The chancel - resting on a crypt, carved out of the rock, dates back to the 11th century. The transept and the nave were added in the 12th century. The nave was covered with Gothic vaults in the Plantagenet style in the 13th century. The present western façade is more recent (14th century) and the tower was rebuilt in the 18th century.

If the wall paintings of the nave - executed in the 19th century - are of litltle interest, those that adorn the crypt of Saint Catherine are remarkable.
