Saint-Arnoult

Église Saint ArnoultLoir-et-Cher (41)

St. Arnoult / Arnould: (6th century). Celebrated in Ile de France. He devoted his life to converting the Franks that were still idolatrous after the baptism of Clovis. He was martyred in a place situated between Chartres and Paris. This place became the village where he is still venerated: Saint Arnoult in the département of Yvelines. Celebrated locally on 18 July

Some marks are not just engraved but carved in bas-relief

These marks, known as workmen's marks, often had a practical purpose. In the Middle Ages, every stone cutter marked his stones when they were ready, to make sure that he would get paid. There was a complex code. We must remember that cutting half a cubic metre of stone into a perfect arch represented several days' work, if not several weeks. It was out of the question not to be paid when workmen had finished their job, hence the code. Thus, each workman has his own code, quite different from the one of other craftsmen
