Villavard's church, which dates from the 11th or 12th century, was significantly altered in the 16th century. It consists of a nave pierced with round-arched windows in the north and pointed-arched windows with Flamboyant tracery in the south, a chancel with a flat chevet and a semicircular apse added more recently. The West door and the tower are modern

The black Virgin played an important role in the history of Villavard: in her honour, Atmeric Aymar had a church built and instituted a pilgrimage. Villavard, which depended on Lavardin became a parish. Almost eight centuries later, Villavard had become an idependent village. The black Virgin is still venerated nowadays
