The parish church of Saint-Nicolas was destroyed by fire in 1070 and rebuilt between 1120 and 1124. The whole church was decorated with mural paintings, including the crypt. The paintings of the crypt were first described in 1862. Those of the chancel and apse were discovered in 1945-46 under a coating of whitewash.

According to Paul-Henri Michel, the central theme of Tavant's paintings is the pilgrimage of the soul, the struggling but redeemed soul.

Left: Pilgrim returning from Jerusalem or "palmer": the palm he is holding in his left hand symbolizes this pilgrimage, as the shell that of Saint-James of Compostella
