Église Saint-MartinSarthe (72)

Built in the 11thcentury, the church underwent alterations in the 12th, 16th, 17th and 19th centuries. The walls in small bond rag-stones as the arches of the windows made of "roussard" sandstone date back to the 11thcentury. The lateral chapels were added in the 12thcentury but turned into a sort of transept in the 16thcentury. The doorway itself is Romanesque but the carved wooden door is from the 16th century. When the chancel was enlarged in the 16th century, it was covered with a painted groin vault.

The Quick

French original

« Nous sommes en gloire et honneur,

Remplis de tous biens et chance.

Au monde mettons notre coeur

En y prenant notre plaisance ».

The Dead

These few lines insist on the inevitability and unpredictability of death and on the necessity of remaining close to God.

The Warning Against Idle Gossip:

Tutivillus (or Titivillus), a minor devil, is regularly found in later Medieval literature. It is his specific job to collect together the syllables ‘dropped’ by inattentive people during Masses and other services in church. No doubt the women (they are all women, I fear) shown in these paintings, preoccupied as they are with secular talk or distracted by secular matters, generally kept Titivillus busy. There will be the Devil to pay at the day of Doom when the gossip’s soul is weighed in the balance against such accumulated minor sins.
