SAINT-MARTIN-de-VERTOU

The eastern part of the church is a modern reconstruction but fortunately the Romanesque nave and transept have been well preserved. The dimensions of this monument are important: one of the largest non vaulted nave dating back to the 11th century. The walls of the nave are faced with a small bond consisting of several layers of roussard (red sandstone) alternating with as many layers of white sandstone. You will notice two blocks of medium bond near the impost of the arch of a walled up door

THE WALL PAINTINGS

Inside, a "litre funéraire" (a black mourning band surmounted by coats of arms) runs along the walls of the nave and the northern arm of the transept
