LOIR-ET-CHER

EGLISE SAINT-LUBIN

St. Lubin: Bishop of Chartres in the 6th century. Born at Poitiers, this peasant became a monk at the abbey of Ligugé, then was one of the most famous bishops of Chartres. Thanks to his prayers, Paris was saved from a terrible fire

Some parts of St. Lubin's, like the north wall of the nave and part of the chancel, are pre-Romanesque. The chancel and the tower were built in the 12th century but were altered in the 16th century, like the south part of the nave. The crocket gable, the west, north and south doors date from the 16th century too

THE WALL PAINTINGS

They probably date from the 16th century but they have hardly been studied. It is therefore difficult to identify the scenes or figures that are represented

This scene may represent the torture that St. Lubin was submitted to by brigands who tortured him in order to force him to reveal where the treasure of his abbey was hidden

Unusual trompe-l'oeil painting of a fleur-de-lis in a medallion. It might also be - judging from its height on the wall of the nave and its location in the church - a trompe-l'oeil tracery canopy for a font that has now disappeared
