Pray

Église Saint-PierreLoir-et-Cher (41)

The church, dedicated to St. Peter, dates back to the 12th century. The chancel and its flat chevet, as well as some narrow windows, areall that is left of the original edifice. The aisleless nave was rebuilt in the 15th century. The picturesque porch and the tower were added or rebuilt later

The porch (close-up): it was used as a shelter by those who were not allowed to enter the church itself, by gossiping parishioners (caqueter = to gossip -> caquetoir) and as a meeting place where official announcements were made. In the Middle Ages, the parish church and its graveyard were the only public places where the villagers could meet and do business
