Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne

Maine-et-Loire (49)

CHAPTER HOUSE / CHAPEL OF THE PRIORY

Founded in the 11th century, the priory of Saint-Rémy depended on the Saint-Aubin abbey in Angers. A rectangular hall, dating back to the foundation of the priory was provided with a pointed-arched vault in the 12th century. The Romanesque windows are still visible above the vault (they can be reached by exterior stone stairs). This room was probably used as a chapter house, chapel or refectory. Some historians think its function may have changed in the course of its history. It has a south-north orientation. The northern wall has retained a remarkable crucifixion scene.
