Eglise Saint-Aubin

Les Ponts-de-Cé

L'église Saint-Aubin date des XIIème et XVème siècles. La nef est romane, et les chapelles lambrissées ainsi que les voûtes du chœur datent du XVème siècle.

The church, dedicated to Saint Aubin, dates to the 12th and 15th centuries. The nave is Romanesque and the panel-vaulted chapels as well as the vaults of the chancel date back to the 15th century.

Saint Aubin was born in the diocese of Vannes in 470. After a childhood devoted to prayer, he soon left his family to become a monk. One day, the abbot of the monastery sent him to a neighbouring village. While he was carrying out his mission, a huge amount of rain fell on the house he had come to visit. The roof collapsed and all those present were drenched. Aubin was the only one to be spared; not a drop of rain touched him. Abbot of his monastery at the age of thirty-five, he rekindled the fervour of the early times among his brethren. But when the bishop of Angers died, the clergy and the people of the diocese elected him unanimously, and his had to accept the heavy burden of the episcopacy.

Funerary slab of slate found near the church and now fixed to the exterior south wall.
