Notre-Dame de l'Assomption

Beaulieu-sur-Layon
Beaulieu-sur-Layon

The chapel is in fact the choir of the former 12th-century parish church, which was partly demolished when the new church was built in 1856. The western wall was then added to close the choir and transform it into a chapel. The 12th-century mural paintings were discovered in 1982.

The mural paintings (12th century):

The half-domed vault of the apse is decorated with a Christ in majesty surrounded by the Tetramorph (the symbols of the four Evangelists). A winger man for Saint Matthew, the lion of Saint Mark, the bull of Saint Luke and the eagle of Saint John.
