Chemillé

Église Notre-DameMaine-et-Loire (49)

(12thand 16th centuries)

Originally, it consisted of a single nave. A northern side-aisle was added in the 12thcentury. The chevet is decorated with animals that are characteristic of the medieval bestiary. The tower, dating back to the mid-12thcentury is lavishly decorated. When the Huguenots plundered and burned part of the edifice in 1569, the church underwent considerable alterations.

The church was probably entirely painted and the mural paintings still visible today were executed between the 12th and the 19th century. The oldest are in the choir and the central apse as well as in the splays of the round-arched windows. There are also traces of murals on the walls of the nave, on the intrados of some arches and on a column.
