Legend of Saint Giles (12th century)

Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher

Gilles was the first disciple of Saint Francis of Assisi. He was a military hero. Near the turn of the thirteenth century he traveled to the solitary home of Saint Francis and begged to be admitted into his society. Saint Francis wholeheartedly consented, but requested from him one thing, obedience. Gilles agreed joyfully, but on that same day was put to the test. As he and Francis journeyed on the road, they encountered a beggar. Saint Francis asked Gilles to give the unfortunate man his cloak and Gilles instantly obeyed. To his surprise, however, when the beggar wrapped the cloak around his shoulders, he rose upwards to the clouds, then vanished from sight.

The lesson he learned was: "When you give to My poor, you give to Me."
