Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, Église Notre-Dame

Built in the 12th century, the church dedicated to Our Lady underwent alterations in the 16th century and was restored in the 19th century. Alternate courses of "roussard" sandstone and limestone underline the Romanesque rounded arches and give the church a very original elegance. The octagonal tower is adorned with pinnacles, corbels and geminate windows.

The Romanesque doorway: the carved double-door dates from the 16th century.

Corbels: on the left: a two-faced Janus * On the right a figure often described as "an acrobat" but that probably symbolized a "turning around" (The Old Man condemned by original sin, can make a spiritual "revolution" thanks to the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross)
