Nohant-Vic

Église Saint-MartinIndre (36)

The church of Saint Martin in Nohant-Vic (or Vicq) dates back to the 11th century. We know that it was given to the abbey of Déols (near Châteauroux) between 1092 and 1099. At the time, it consisted of a single nave prolonged by a rectangular choir. The half-domed apse and the southern chapel were added in the 12th century. The extraordinary wall paintings decorating most of the church were also executed in the 12th century.

THE WALL PAINTINGS:

As you enter the church, the paintings literally leap out at you. They are relatively well preserved, the colours are still vivid, but what strikes you is the style. The faces of the painted figures have a stunning robustness and vigour: round, chubby-cheeked heads, the cheekbones highlighted with a red spot, round, squinting eyes. The Kiss of Judas is both fascinating and disturbing.
