Sainte-Lizaigne

Église Sainte LizaigneIndre (36)

St. Lizaigne (no other church in France is dedicated to this saint) gave her name to the village that developed around a Gallo-roman villa in the late 2nd or early 3rd century. According to local tradition, Carolus Magnus (768-814) having ordered the construction of a monastery two leagues from Issoudun, one of his daughters, Lisania, was its first abbess. It is more likely that the lady who owned the land and founded the first place of worship gave it her name

The present church was built in the 11th and 12th centuries and has not undergone a lot of changes, except a total neglect for several decades. Fortunately, its restoration began five years ago thanks to the Association for the Rescue of Sainte Lizaigne with subsidies from the Government, the Région Centre, the Département and the Village of Sainte-Lizaigne. The restoration work is still under way and the church is not accessible to the public

She is holding the banner of faith in one hand and a chalice in the other
